Angling Report: Dec 2000 Lake Brunner Fly Fishing Report
14th - 22nd. The weather was variable, colder than usual, with some fresh snow on the Alps one evening. A couple of days brought showers, but we managed 2 nights camping out without incident. Lake conditions were tough, with the water level very low and clear, and the temperatures high.
The trout were apathetic along lake margins, and large numbers were laying in the river mouths, obviously trying to gain some respite from the warm lake waters. Mr KC Mueller, my client for the week, caught some very nice trout - 2-3 on every evening but one! Fish varied in size from 2lbs to around 4lbs, the larger caught on live "bullies." We were forced to resort to childhood fishing methods, using live bait, to fish with consistent success.
Fresh garden worms still produce results in low river conditions. The local cockabully, a small minnow-sized fish which inhabits the rocks and reeds, is lethal on big browns close to nightfall.
25th - 30th. The drought broke..... the lake rose 2 metres, a result of raging floods in all our local rivers. Falling water levels provided excellent fishing everywhere.
